Engaging Diversity in The Workplace
Diversity is generally defined as ‘differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation and spiritual practice’. Managing diversity includes acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing, and celebrating those differences.
In South Africa, the 1994 demographic transformation placed the richness of the country's diverse heritage in true focus. This legacy is reflected in corporate South Africa and is underpinned by variables such as globalisation, the Information and Communication Technology revolution, national legislation, the transition to an ‘open' economy, a renewed emphasis on human capital issues, and the need to address the socio-economic inequalities of the past.
Transformation of companies to meet these demands cannot occur through change in structures only, but also through changes in systems, ideas, values and attitudes, and through the development of an appropriate company culture that manages change and its implications.
All companies have inherent capabilities for managing diversity. These must be enhanced through motivation and training to ensure that all stakeholders are committed to enhancing diversity, valuing differences and similarities in order to meet the objectives of the company.
Management of diversity has many benefits such as improved company morale, greater competitiveness, improved productivity, creativity and sustainability, all of which - as research has abundantly shown - impact favourably on the bottom line. Conversely, failure to manage diversity has costly implications; reduced productivity, poor corporate image and reputation, poor financial performance, and stagnation to name a few.
In conclusion, each business should realise that engaging with diversity and genuinely appreciating the value of different perspectives in the workplace offers the opportunity to harness very real benefits for South African organisations.

Design Business Strategy with the C@ps System
Strategic planning is an important aspect in the development and success of any business entity. If you are looking for a simple, effective and affordable strategic planning, implementation and performance process that aligns all the staff to achieving your organisation’s vision Litha-Lethu advocates the use of a computerised system developed by Clive Howe known as c@ps (Compass Aligned Performance System).
c@ps is delivered in a two day practical interactive session that produces a one page strategic plan, together with supportive individual performance plans for the next six months and an execution process to ensure the system is monitored and results are achieved. Any existing Strategic Plan or Balanced Scorecard can be incorporated into the c@ps model with ease.
Further to the two-day session there are follow up interventions designed around the organisational requirements to keep the focus and performance measures alive. Leaders will be coached on how to keep the plan active and to make adjustments when things change.
The people who have to perform create the c@ps plans and, as a result, the buy-in and ownership is enhanced.
The c@ps process is easily cascaded through the organisation from top strategy; to annual team plans; to individual plans and performance criteria. This holistic approach involves all the people in the organisation. This enables them to realise the contribution they are making to the achievement of the vision.
In large organisations, key people will be coached on how to facilitate the c@ps process through a methodology that is participative and motivating. This allows staff to quickly and effectively contribute to the success of the organisation.
This strategic planning system has been used to develop the strategic plans for successful commercial entities such as: Bidvest, The Standard Bank Group, Tongaat Hulett, Engen Petroleum Ltd, and state and parastatal organisations such as: Department of Education, Department of Justice, Department of Transport, Transnet Housing, Portnet and the City of Johannesburg.
